African popular music also know as “Afro-Pop” like African traditional music, is vast and varied. Most contemporary genres of African popular music build on cross-pollination with western popular music.
Fasina who’s got this unique sound of his own alongside his Afro-Pop genre has been in the game for a long time now but was pretty much recognised in his base, United Kingdom. With his first ever EP titled “Lift“, fasina proved to his listeners that he’s got more to come. The EP was released on the 14th of October, on his soundcloud. Presently “Lift” Ep has over 50,000 plays with tracks like Tonight, Lights, Fly With Me and The Family.
After much hard-work and appearance on awesome projects, Fasina garnered himself a positive count of Nigerian listeners. Appearing on Dj Femo’s début single “Adara” and more. Joining forces with Music Producer, HIGO for one of our favourite tracks from him “5-Star“, also with Minz for mind soothing club banger “Freaky“, with producer Adey for his recent one “Split” and more you need to checkout on his Soundcloud page.
MPA: Tell us about your childhood.
Fasina: I was born in DC, Washington but moved around quite a lot when I was young from the states to Nigeria (mushin) and London. Moved to London on a more permanent basis during the last years of primary school Thamesmead, a place in south east London. It was rough, got into a lot of mischief in school (the regular), my mum didn’t like the way things were going for me, (put a lot of my energy into getting into trouble) and moved me out to Nigeria. Got there and I had a lot of life changes, met great people, connected more with my roots it just felt like home to me.
When did you start thinking seriously about making music ?
I’ve been making music since I was young. Experimenting with Rap, Grime & Afro Beats. I started taking it serious about 2016 which was a year after my eldest bro passed. He made music as well so it felt like the right thing to do and something in me got me to take it seriously.
Can you rap too ?
Yeah I can but I haven’t in a while, lol I’m crazy rusty. Been too long.
Would be really interesting to hear you rap.
I have a song called 28 to 4 on soundcloud, I rapped on it.
What are the challenges you’ve faced been an artist ?
I face challenges every day, whether it be mental or daily struggles. It’s only recently I’ve been seeing revenue so it keeps me up & helps me get stuff done. But like funding your dreams is an issue but the end goal keeps me going so I don’t complain. Just try to figure new ways to progress & move forward.
How was your stay in Lagos last December (2017) ?
Being in Lagos is always good, it’s my second home. Lol when I come I practically get into the zone & just do me. Shows were sick, music was great got to work with a few artists/producers & personal faves like ShowDemCamp, Spaxx & Adey. Linked up with my guys & music peers, same stuff.
Having skepta in Nigeria was crazy though, like it felt surreal to me because I’m from London, I grew up listening to these guys and to see him in Nigeria was nuts. Gave me more faith in my shit, seeing how people connect with his stuff. Music is universal.
